Although Florida was the third state to secede it remians the forgotten state of the confederacy. Following secession and the outbreak of fighting, Florida officals had to organise and army to defend the state. Federal forces remained in control of Key West, Fort Zachary Taylor, Fort Jefferson, and Fort Pickens which made Florida vunerable throughout the state. The largest battle in Florida took place at Olustee on February 20, 1864. Governor Milton ill and depressed over the military and political situation commited suicide in April of 1865 and by early June the last organized resistance in the southern half of the peninsula collapsed as well.
